Audition Notice-La Maupin

Written and directed by Kelsey Milbourn.

La Maupin is a tale of love and tragedy set in 18th-century France all wrapped up in high-octane, queer, punk rock meets Vanity Fair package.

Our Mission:

We are storytellers who create ensemble-based, physical productions that embody the intersection between movement and dance to represent our diverse community, offer educational opportunities, and empower all voices.

Dates: All live auditions slots are complete. Video submissions being accepted!

Please send an up to 60 second video of you dancing ballet/modern, along with your headshot and resume. If you have video of you doing stage combat please submit that as well. To submit, fill out the audition form on our website.

We always let artists know either way if they have been cast within a reasonable time period following auditions. Rehearsals will be scheduled around actor availability at a later date. Actors will receive a stipend.

Performances:

July 11-13th
AT&T Performing Arts Center: Hamon Hall-2403 Flora Street, Dallas, TX 75201

Plot:
La Maupin is based on the true story of Julie D’Aubigny, bisexual duelist and opera singer who was famous for dueling men and wooing their women. Through a beautiful mix of sword fighting and dance, the show details her almost too incredible to believe exploits (like the time she burned down a nunnery to escape with her lover, or the time she fought 3 men at once- and won!) While exploring Julie’s journey to find happiness and acceptance as a queer woman way ahead of her time.

From its inception, La Maupin has aimed to tell an LGBTQ-focused story unflinchingly. Especially in a time where queer-identifying people are being silenced and vilified just for existing, we want to celebrate the story of an incredible bisexual woman who fought every day just for her right to exist authentically.

Roles:
We are seeking to fill 2-6 ensemble roles for our upcoming Elevator Project production with a possible extended daes and different locations. Ensemble size may vary based on location size. We strongly desire ethnically-diverse, queer artists in particular for these roles, as none of the ensemble spots require a specific gender identity or ethnic background.

Strong dance and acting skills required. Stage combat optional. See below for role specifics. As always, our shows are movement-heavy. If you consider yourself a physical storyteller, we want to see you! We are always willing to train and grow the right person for the role. Roles requirements below:

  • Acting- the style of the show is a “punk idea of period,” so modern and period-style acting experience are a plus. Think Vanity Fair meets queer punk rock. (Visit our facebook or website to see workshop production photos of this show for reference.)

  • Dance- Ballet and modern experience. Strong movers who can tell physical stories are welcome.

  • Stage Combat- Not a requirement as we will teach whoever is cast, but it would be a bonus if you have single sword, small sword, or rapier experience.

  • Need to be comfortable with physical queer intimacy- likely includes kissing. (There will be an Intimacy Coordinator for this production.)

  • Note: All dialogue in the show will be in French. We in NO WAY require you to speak any French at all-we will teach you the proper pronunciations for your lines. If you do have previous French experience, please share! Our shows are not dialogue-heavy like a normal play or musical, as they are movement focused, but there will be some speaking.

Content Warnings: The lead character of Julie exposes her breasts at one point in the production. Production contains mature themes.

The majority of roles (lead and supporting) have been pre-cast, pulling from previous 2022 workshop production. Director and writer, Kelsey Milbourn, will be portraying the lead and filling the role of Intimacy Coordinator.
