La Maupin: The French Abomination

La Maupin is a tale of love and tragedy set in 18th century France all wrapped up in high octane punk rock meets vanity fair package.

This show proudly displays queer bodies

engaged in technically impressive, tightly choreographed sequences of intimacy and

violence that are designed to be safe, but exciting and tangible to an

intimate seating arrangement.

Purposefully minimalistic, this production was created with touring in

mind. There are only 6 players in total, and the show only needs two

costume racks, swords, and candles to create its playing space.

La Maupin is based on the true story of Julie D’Aubigny, bisexual duelist and opera singer who was famous for dueling men and wooing their women. Through a beautiful mix of sword fighting and dance, the show details her almost too incredible to believe exploits (like the time she burned down a nunnery to escape with her lover, or the time she fought 3 men at once- and won!) While exploring Julie’s journey to find happiness and acceptance as a queer woman way ahead of her time.

From its inception, La Maupin has aimed to tell an LGBTQ-focused story unflinchingly. Especially in a time where queer-identifying people are being silenced and vilified just for existing, we want to celebrate the story of an incredible bisexual woman who fought every day just for her right to exist authentically.
